The importance of veterinarians for food safety

Veterinarians are rare in Africa and often unaffordable for small farmers or pastoralists. Therefore, Veterinarians without Borders has enabled young Maasai to be trained as veterinarians to ensure the health of farm animals on site. | © Veterinarians without Borders

Veterinarians play a key role in food safety. Not only are they the first persons to contact whenever the welfare of farm animals is in question. They bear a great responsibility towards society by administering medicines in case of illnesses and not least by inspecting meat of slaughtered animals.

Antibiotic resistances in developing countries are only one example, how serious the consequences of improper use of medicines can be. Antibiotics are easy to get there, but often unsuited for treating concrete symptoms. Also, medication is often given incorrectly or not long enough. If there is no immediate improvement, another drug will be tried. Dead animals often have a real pharmaceutical cocktail in their organisms.
