Diversity on the plate: Indigenous peoples live sustainability in practice

As reported in our blog from 10 Aug 2018, our unbalanced diet presents great ecological challenges for the world. Indigenous peoples, such as the Maasai or Sandawe in East Africa, have been living in harmony with nature for millennia and are vivid examples of sustainability in practice.

The food of the Maasai is based on what their herds supply them, mainly dairy products and little meat. The Sandawe as traditional hunter-gatherers have a wider food spectrum. About 80 % of their diet is based on plants. They collect wild vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries or roots. The rest is bushmeat that the men hunt. But also insects are on the menu. They are not only a valuable addition, but are also popular as a snack.
